That Night (the Savior’s birth)

It probably wasn’t perfect, in fact, not even close. It was hot, sticky, smelly and gross. There must have been animal fur everywhere and dirt on the floor. It was a place where animals were kept. She probably sweated a lot and maybe even passed out. The baby must have cried and screamed like any other child would. There was still destruction, sin and evil in the world. Joseph was probably worried like any other father. He probably had a tough time accepting it all as he sits next to his wife on the floor of the lower level. She must have looked around and thought “why is it like this for the Savior of the world” as she stared into her son’s baby blue eyes. The baby was probably uncomfortable in the hard, rough manger and itchy from all the hay. This night, which was so glorious, did not seem so then. The details are not entirely important but remember not to romanticize the whole scene. Yes, there were angels and an adorable newborn baby, but the people there could probably speak of the night much differently than expected. The main point to remember, though, is to know Mary, Joseph and above all Jesus went through all this for you and me. The lowest of sinners. For all the cowards, drunkards, and beaten down people, he was born in these conditions and later embraced his cross and a crown of thorns because of His great love for them. So, instead of royalty and soft pillows like what should have been (even though it would have never been able to hold such royalty as was deserved) he came down and humbled himself not only to come to earth, but to the point of a manger.
