The Bible

I just want to give you some Bible verses that describe the Bible and talk a little bit about what they’re saying. I was always told that we should use the Bible to interpret the Bible, so that is what I will use as well to describe the Bible.

The purpose of the Bible (which can also be referred to as scripture or, the “sacred writings of Christianity”) can be found in 2 Timothy 3:16-17. These verses say…

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

This means that God divinely inspired the words that were written in the Bible. It is not just another book. It is “breathed out by God”.

Romans 15:4 also speaks to the purpose of the Bible.

“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”

Jesus said in Matthew 24:35 that his words would never pass away, even though the earth would. This shows the importance of scripture, and the words of God that were recorded in it.

God’s word is not ordinary, as I stated before and some ways in which it says this to be true is in Hebrews 4 verses 12 and 13.

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

I can attest to the sheer power of God and in his words it shines through. God speaks in confidence when his words are recorded in the Bible. The Bible’s messages are no normal things either, they are, as the passage says, active. This means that they work in people’s hearts and minds and change their thoughts and affect their actions. The words of God are not stagnant and ineffective, they contribute positively to people every time the words are read and soaked in. God speaks to us individually through the his Holy Spirit while we read God’s word. He then can help us in times of need and encourage us and challenge us and others by letting us remember the words we read/memorized.

There are two more verses I want to share with you.

The first one is Matthew 4:4, which says “…Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Jesus quoted this verse to Satan (the devil) when Jesus was tempted by him. Jesus had been fasting for a long time and Satan was trying to tempt him while he was weak. Jesus only refused and quoted scripture back to Satan. I love this verse because it shows that we are not fully reliant on food (“bread”), but on God and his word to give us strength and wisdom. (Obviously, while we are still physical beings we need food to live, but spiritually all we need is God and his word fills us up.) I am currently fasting to practice denying my flesh and living for God and this verse is very encouraging.

The last verse is Psalm 119:105 which says “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” This is significant because it tells us that God’s word can be a light to our paths in life as well. God guides us with his word and shows us how to make certain decisions. His word is also encouraging, challenging, and helpful for all situations. I am not saying that it will tell you exactly what college to go to, or what to eat for dinner, but it will help you know what is right and wrong and how to go about in certain situations.

I hope this was helpful and told you a little more about the Bible, if you didn’t know. Thanks for reading:)
